Menopause & Skin Changes: What No One Tells You (But Should)

Aging comes with wisdom—and sometimes, weird surprises.

One of the biggest things I wasn’t prepared for in menopause? The changes to my skin. It wasn’t just about wrinkles or aging. Suddenly, my skin felt drier, thinner, and less radiant, even though I was still using the same products I always had.

If you’ve noticed unexpected changes to your skin in your 40s or 50s, especially during perimenopause or menopause, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining it.

🌿 What’s Happening to Our Skin?

During menopause, hormone levels—especially estrogen—drop significantly. Estrogen plays a major role in:

  • Collagen production (which keeps skin firm and bouncy)
  • Oil production (which keeps skin moisturized)
  • Skin thickness and elasticity

When estrogen declines, it’s common to experience:

  • Increased dryness or flakiness
  • Fine lines and sagging skin
  • More sensitivity or redness
  • A dull or “tired” appearance

Add stress, sleep disruption, and changing routines to the mix—and your skin can feel like it’s aging overnight.

🧴 Why Your Old Skincare Might Not Be Enough

If your old go-to products suddenly aren’t working anymore, it’s probably not the product—it’s your skin’s new needs.

Skin in menopause often needs:

  • Gentler products (no stripping or harsh ingredients)
  • More moisture, both on the surface and deeper layers
  • Barrier support to reduce sensitivity and inflammation
  • Ingredients that support collagen & hydration, like hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, or natural oils

💡 What You Can Do

The good news? You don’t need a 10-step routine or expensive procedures to start feeling good in your skin again.

Here are a few simple changes that made a big difference for me:

  • Switching to a cream-based cleanser instead of foaming
  • Adding a hydrating serum or facial oil at night
  • Being consistent with SPF, even on cloudy days
  • Drinking more water and supporting gut health

(More on that in a future post—it’s wild how connected it all is!)
